Not all stress is bad. In fact, some stress can be healthy and even motivating—it gives us focus, energy, and a sense of purpose. But when stress becomes chronic, overwhelming, or disconnected from what truly matters, it can take a toll on our body, mind, and spirit.
Understanding the difference between good stress (eustress) and bad stress (distress) is the first step toward listening to your body and creating more balance.
🌿 What Is Good Stress?
Eustress is the kind of stress that helps you rise to a challenge. It’s short-term, energizing, and often tied to something meaningful—like preparing for a presentation, starting a new job, or even planning a vacation.
Good stress:
Feels purposeful and exciting
Increases focus and motivation
Pushes you to grow or adapt
Resolves once the situation passes
Your body is activated, but not overwhelmed. You feel alert, but not drained.
🌪️ What Is Bad Stress?
Distress is the kind of stress that lingers. It feels heavy, consuming, and often out of your control. It may stem from things like work burnout, long-term caregiving, unresolved emotional pain, or simply doing too much for too long without rest.
Bad stress:
Feels exhausting or anxiety-inducing
Disrupts sleep, digestion, or mood
Lasts longer than your body can handle
Leads to burnout, overwhelm, or illness
Over time, chronic stress can affect your nervous system, immune health, hormones, and emotional well-being.
How to Tell the Difference
Ask yourself:
Does this stress energize me or exhaust me?
Is this connected to something meaningful or draining?
Does it pass, or has it become constant?
Do I feel supported, or am I carrying it all alone?
Even good stress can become harmful if it isn’t balanced with rest, boundaries, and recovery.
