Can laughter keep the doctor away?

When was the last time you laughed so freely your body relaxed and everything felt just a bit lighter?

In the world of wellness, we often focus on what we eat, how we move, how we sleep, and which supplements we take—but sometimes we forget the simple joys that actually nourish the soul:

Laughter.

When we laugh, our body gets a clear signal that it’s safe. The parasympathetic nervous system steps in, inviting our whole body to soften.

Laughter interrupts the low-grade state of urgency many of us live in—the one where we’re technically “fine,” but also one notification away from dramatic sighing, and it creates real, measurable changes in the body:

• Lowers stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline

• Improves circulation and heart health

• Stimulates the vagus nerve, calming the nervous system

• Boosts immune function

• Releases endorphins—the body’s natural feel-good chemicals

In short: laughter gently tells our body, “You’re safe.” And when the body feels safe, digestion improves, sleep deepens, cravings soften, and resilience increases. That’s wellness at its root.

This week, instead of adding another habit, try this:

• Keep a short “laugh list” — favorite reels, or videos you know will work every time

• Spend time with someone who brings out your playful side

• Laugh with your whole body—loud, messy, unfiltered

• Smile at yourself in the mirror — awkward at first, surprisingly effective

Who said wellness has to be serious? Sometimes it’s just about feeling good, smiling, and letting yourself enjoy the ride.

More ease. More laughter.
